What is Living Away From Home Allowance?

LAFHA is a benefit paid to compensate workers for additional expenses they suffer due to being required to live away from their usual place of residence to work. It gives workers higher take home pay as a portion of their wage becomes tax free. The employer saves money on taxes too. When we calculate LAFHA employers are not liable to pay any Fringe Benefits Tax on it- so everyone wins!

Although employers only stand to save through the implementation of LAFHA it is ultimately their decision whether to administer the benefit or not, it is therefore advisable, but not essential, to discuss and negotiate the inclusion of LAFHA in your salary package prior to your contract being drawn up.

Am I eligible?

Eligibility to receive living away from home allowance as part of your salary package is dependent upon many factors, the main requirements are:

• Workers must be required to live away from usual place of residence in order carry out the duties of their employment
• To be eligible a worker must intend to return to usual place of residence once work is completed
